Chuck-a-Palooza 2009
This past Friday night, GVSU embarked on what I hope is a new tradition for the football program. The Athletic Department decided to migrate a tradition normally used by NCAA teams to rally support at the beginning of the basketball season to our football program.
Friday night at 11:45pm, the public was invited to the Laker Turf Building to join the returning team members for the first spring practice to get a first look at the 2009 Lakers. Along with watching the practice, the public was engaged via multiple contests with the chance of winning a multitude of prizes ranging all the way from tshirts/scarves to a trip to Canyon, TX in August for the 2009 season opener vs. West Texas A&M. They also had music, trivia and interviews with Steve Lloyd Jones throughout the evening.
The event was a great success with around 750 people in attendance. The first 500 received official Chuck-a-Palooza tshirts ( I got there at 11:45 and didn’t get one. ) along with the first 100 getting tennis balls which were used to try and win game Adidas worn jersies.
I did take quite a bit of video turning the event and will be posting in the next few days. I thought the event went over quite well and am hopeful that the event becomes a GVSU tradition to return next March. Stay tuned for more coverage.
